Some roadways in Saskatoon are poised for new speed limits.

City council’s transportation committee voted to recommend changing or establishing speed limits on 10 roads.

A report submitted to the transportation committee on Monday outlined speed limits for portions of 12 roads, but two of the recommendations were deferred.

Ward 8 Coun. Sarina Gersher asked that the Northeast Swale Watchers be consulted on a recommendation to have a speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour on McOrmond Drive from Central Avenue to Wanuskewin Road, since the road passes through the city’s Small Swale.

“I think this needs a bit more discussion and I would just be interested to know what the stakeholder committee has to say,” Gersher said, noting the Small Swale has a “similar ecological significance” as the Northeast Swale, which has a lower speed limit of 50 km/h.

The recommendation to increase the speed limit to 60 km/h from 50 on Fedoruk Drive from Central Avenue to McOrmond Drive was also deferred until further construction is complete.

Angela Gardiner, the city’s acting director of transportation and utilities, said costs associated with the changes will be “minor” because only three of the 10 changes — Miller Avenue, 71st Street and College Drive — will involve changing speed limits on existing roads.

She said additional signage will be posted to ensure motorists are aware of the changes.

The seven remaining roadways are under construction as part of the Northway Commuter Parkway Project.

Speed limits approved by the transportation committee:

-Central Avenue from Agra Road to a point 220 metres north of Somers Road: drops to 50 km/h from 60
-Lowe Road from Agra Road to a point 800 metres north of Lowe Road: drops to 50 km/h from 80
